Guinea confirms Doumbouya as president for seven-year term

(MENAFN) Guinea’s Supreme Court on Sunday officially confirmed General Mamady Doumbouya as the victor of the December 28 presidential election, awarding him 86.72% of the vote for a seven-year term. Supreme Court President Fode Bangoura announced the results, noting that runner-up Abdoulaye Yero Balde, who received 6.59%, voluntarily dropped his legal challenge to the provisional tally.

Doumbouya’s election follows a new constitution approved in a September referendum, which extended presidential terms from five to seven years and allowed military leaders to run for office.

In a broadcast after the ruling, Doumbouya declared: “Today, there are neither winners nor losers. There is only one Guinea, united and indivisible,” urging citizens to work toward “a new Guinea, a Guinea of peace, justice, shared prosperity, and fully assumed political and economic sovereignty.”

This vote marks Guinea’s first presidential election since Doumbouya led a military coup in September 2021 that removed former President Alpha Conde from power.
